2020년 10월 2일 폭스 뉴스에 소개된 Max Lucado의 설교를 편역하여 소개한다. 맥스 루카도는 한국교회에 잘 알려진 미국 텍사스주 남부 샌 안토니오 교회의 담임목사이며 베스트 셀러 작가이다.*

2020년에 이르러 우리는 코로나-19, 산불, 허리케인 등으로 채찍을 당했고 당하고 있습니다.

첫째로, 우리는 코로나-19의 채찍을 당했습니다. COVID-19는 20만 명의 생명을 빼앗가 갔습니다. 수백만 명의 일자리를 잃어버렸습니다. 전 세계의 정신을 앗아갈 위험이 있습니다. 아주 미세한 바이러스가 우리를 마비시켰습니다.

또한 지난날의 잘못된 죄가 우리를 무너뜨리려고 위협하고 있습니다. 흑인의 목을 누른 경찰의 무릎 때문에 이 땅에 분노의 물결을 일으켰습니다. 인종차별이 사라지길 바랐던 사람들을 실망시키고 있습니다.

둘째로, 날씨의 채찍을 맞고 있습니다. 거칠고 엉뚱한 날씨로 고통을 당하고 있습니다. 허리케인으로 엄청난 고통을 당했습니다. 미 서부지역의 화재로 수많은 사람들이 목숨과 재산을 잃었습니다. 산속의 공기가 도시의 공기보다 더 오염이 되었습니다.

셋째로 선거를 앞두고 분열의 채찍을 맞고 있습니다. 대법관 루스 베이더 긴스버그 의 죽음과 더불어 진보와 보수가 격돌하고 있습니다. 마스크, 학교 대면 수업 재개, 백신 등 양쪽이 분열되어 있습니다.

심지어, 미국 대통령과 영부인이 COVID-19 양성 반응을 보였습니다. 트럼프 대통령은 금요일 밤 월터 리드 국립 군사 의료 센터로 옮겨졌습니다. 우리는 2020년 한해가 다 가도록 채찍질을 당하고 있습니다.

그러나 이러한 갈등, 분열, 싸움으로 우리가 바닥까지 끌려가서는 안됩니다. 지금은 결코 포기할 때가 아닙니다. 이제 일어날 때가 되었습니다.

오늘 증거하는 말씀은 성경에서 가장 잘 알려진 메시지 중 하나입니다. 예수 그리스도의 오병이어의 말씀입니다.

많은 사람들이 예수 그리스도께 나와 그분의 말씀을 듣고 있었습니다. 그런데 빈들이요 저녁이 되었지만 무리들이 먹을 것이 없었습니다. 그들을 먹을 음식 없었습니다. 쇼핑할 음식 트럭이나 음식 가게가 없었습니다. 약 성인 남자 5천명을 비롯하여 남녀노소의 15,000명이 굶주리고 있었습니다.

예수님은 제자 빌립을 시험하기 위해 빵을 구해 오라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런데 빌립은 “ 이 수많은 사람을 먹일 충분한 빵이 어디있겠습니까? 뻥을 구할 수천 달러가 어디 있습니까? 라고 의문을 제기하였습니다.

그런데 예수의 다른 제자 중 한 사람인 시몬 베드로의 형제 안드레가 예수께 말했습니다. “여기 한 소년이 보리 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가지고 있습니다. 오, 그런데 이 수많은 사람들이게 이것이 얼마가 되겠습니까?(요한복음 6 : 6-9)라고 말했습니다.

그럼에도 불구하고 예수님께서 역사하셨습니다. “… 예수께서 떡을 가져다가 감사를 드렸을 때 앉은 자들과 그들이 원하는 만큼의 물고기도 나누어 주셨습니다.”(요한복음 6:11)

저는 당시 무리들이 푸른 잔디 위에서 발을 쭉 뻗어 잠을 잘 만큼 배가 부르고 만족했을 것이라고 상상해 보았습니다. 배고픈 배는 만족한 배가 되었을 것입니다. 음식이 너무 많아서 남은 것이 12 바구니나 되었습니다. 아마 의심했던 제자들에게 기념품이 되었을 것입니다.

“이 모든 사람들”을 먹이는 불가능에 대한 도전을 그들이게 잊혀지지 않는 기적이 되었습니다. 우리가 할 수 없는 것을 그리스도께서는 하십니다.

오늘날 우리가 당면한 문제가 문제로 남아있다면 우리는 가슴 쓰리고 분노가 일어날 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 당면한 문제를 주님께 가지고 나가면 그 분께서는 문제를 해결해 주실 것입니다.

우리 앞에 15,000개의 문제가 있습니까? 돈, 빵 또는 생선을 세기 전에 우리의 시야를 돌려 주님을 봅시다. 당면한 문제 앞에 자신을 바라보기 보다 주님을 바라봅시다.

우리는 먼저 그리스도를 믿고 의지해야 합니다. 우리의 오리막이 주님의 내리막이 됩니다. 주님은 우리의 문제에 당황하지 않습니다. 그분에게 우리의 필요와 문제를 내어놓을 때, 그 분은 분명코 해결해 주실 것입니다.

여러분은 우리가 당면한 상황이 매우 어렵게 느껴질 수 있지만 그 분은 그렇지 않습니다. 여러분이 여러분의 문제를 그분께 내려놓고 감사드릴 때, 그분은 여러분의 문제에 역사하실 것입니다.

우리는 2020년도 한해가 다하기까지 채찍질을 당할 수 있습니다. 그러나 그분에게는 그렇지 않습니다. 그 분은 우리가 아는 것보다 더 가까이 우리 곁에 계십니다. 그분은 우리가 생각하는 것보다 더 강하시고 능력이 계십니다. 우리는 결코 혼자가 아닙니다. 이 채찍의 고난 가운데 승리하시길 축복합니다.

First came the pandemic. COVID-19 has taken the lives of 200,000, the jobs of millions, and it threatens to take the sanity of the entire world. A microscopic virus has paralyzed us.

And an ancient sin threatens to undo us. An officer’s knee on the neck of a Black man activated a wave of subterranean anger. Anyone who’d hoped racism was fading was convinced otherwise.

Then, the weather; the wild, wacky weather. The National Hurricane Center, for only the second time in history, has resorted to the Greek alphabet for storm names. Winds are brewing in the Gulf. Fires are raging in the West. Mountain air has become more toxic than city pollution.

And dare I mention the word “election”? We are bracing for impact. The division is so profound that the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg became a topic of controversy before it was a reason for grief.

We’ve taken disagreement to an art form. Masks. Reopening schools. We have no vaccine but are already arguing about who gets it.

And now the president of the United States and our first lady have tested positive for COVID-19. President Trump was moved to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Friday night.

We are whipsawed by 2020. But let’s not let the struggles pull us under. Now is not the time to give up. Now is the time to look up.

This is the message of one of the best-known stories in the Bible. A crowd of people was trying to get close to Jesus Christ. At a certain point, he realized that the multitude had nothing to eat. They had no more food in their sacks. They had no food trucks or stores in which to shop. These 15,000-plus (5,000 men plus women and children) people were hungry.

“Where can we buy enough bread to feed all these people?” (Jesus was asking this question to test Philip, because Jesus knew what he himself was going to do.) Philip responded, “Several thousand dollars’ worth of bread wouldn’t be enough to give even a tiny bite to all these people!”

Then one of Jesus’ other disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Jesus, “There is a boy here with five loaves of barley bread and two fish. Oh, but what are these things when there are all these people?” (John 6:6-9)

We’d like to think the followers would respond with more faith. After all, they’ve seen water turned into wine and a lame man walk. We’d like to see more spunk, more grit. More, “We can’t, but you can, Jesus!” But they show no spark. They counted the hungry people, the money in their bag, the amount of bread and fish. They did not, however, count on Christ.

And he was standing right there! He could not have been nearer. They could see, hear, touch, maybe even smell him. Yet, the idea of soliciting his help did not dawn on them.

Even so, Jesus went right to work.

“… Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated, and as much fish as they were wanting, too.” (John 6:11)

I envision the people sprawled out on the green grass, so satisfied that they needed a nap. Those who didn’t sleep picked their teeth. No small amount of belching could be heard. Hungry bellies became happy bellies. There was so much food that 12 baskets of leftovers were gathered. (One souvenir for each doubting apostle?)

The impossible challenge of feeding “all these people” became the unforgettable miracle of all these people fed. What we cannot do, Christ does!

If you see your troubles as nothing more than isolated hassles and hurts, you’ll grow bitter and angry. Yet, if you see your troubles as opportunities to trust God and his ability to multiply what you give him, then even the smallest of incidents take on significance.

Do you face 15,000 problems? Before you count your money, bread, or fish, before you count yourself out, turn and look at the One standing next to you!

Count first on Christ. Your uphill is downhill for him. He is not stumped by your problem. When you present your needs to him, he never, ever turns to the angels and says, “Well, it finally happened. I’ve been handed a code I cannot crack. The demand is too great, even for me.”

You may feel outnumbered, but he does not. Give him what you’ve got, offer thanks, and watch him go to work.

We may be whipsawed by 2020, but he’s not. You are stronger than you think because he is nearer than you know. You are never alone.
