OUR COMMUNITY: Who We Are

Calvary Church at San Jose is a dynamic, growing, multi-ethnic, and multi-language congregation. At our core, we strive to be a true Church of Jesus Christ—a community where every member is trained as His disciple, where we are passionately dedicated to raising the next generation as disciples, and where we join together in the joyful mission of sharing the Gospel with the world.

THE CALL: A Pastoral Invitation

We are not simply looking for a staff member to fill a position; we are praying for a pastor to join our family. We seek someone who desires more than just a "job." We want a co-worker who will share our vision, breathe our community’s air, and become a true member of our loving family. Our heart is to find a leader who is eager to work, learn, and grow alongside our Senior Pastor to eventually become a great lead pastor in the future.

If you are looking for a place where you can prepare for your future as a lead pastor through hands-on mentorship and shared ministry, we invite you to this journey.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Associate Pastor (AP) at Calvary UMC will serve to strengthen our ministry foundation and lead our youth into a deeper relationship with Christ. Working side-by-side with the Senior Pastor, the AP will act as a vital bridge between pastoral vision and lay execution, ensuring the spiritual health and operational alignment of the congregation.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Total Compensation Package: $52,000 – $83,200

- This comprehensive package includes the housing benefit.

- Housing Provision: As part of this total compensation, a 3-bedroom house in the Cambrian Park area (valued at over $48,000 annually) or an equivalent Housing Allowance is provided.

- The upper end of the salary range is designated for ordained pastors with relevant experience

Additional Childcare Benefit: Eligible candidates with a pre-school aged child receive free enrollment at our on-site pre-school (a value of $1,700 per month / $20,400 annually).

Healthcare Optimization: This package is strategically structured to maximize tax-exempt housing allowance, which may allow staff to qualify for highly subsidized health insurance (ACA/Obamacare).

Professional Growth: Mentorship under the Senior Pastor and opportunities for broader leadership development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Category 1: Lay Leadership Empowerment & Ministry Coordination

This responsibility focuses on fostering a strong lay-led ministry by equipping Shepherds to lead their respective Flocks in alignment with the church vision.

Shepherd Support & Empowerment: The AP will provide primary oversight and support for the church’s "Shepherd & Flock" structure. Serve as a primary resource and coach for the Shepherds—the lay leaders of our five Flocks. Under the guidance of the Senior Pastor, the AP will focus on recruiting, training, and equipping Shepherds to lead with spiritual maturity. The goal is not for the AP to do the work of the ministry, but to empower lay leaders to perform the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:12).

Ministry Coordination (The Five Core Focuses): Assist the Shepherds in coordinating activities across the five core areas: Education, Worship, Fellowship, Outreach, and Mission. The AP acts as a facilitator to ensure these ministries remain healthy and aligned with the church’s strategic direction, providing hands-on support as needed to ensure successful execution by the lay teams.

Category 2: Next Generation & Youth Leadership

The Associate Pastor will take a direct leadership role in the Education focus, with a specific mandate to build a vibrant Youth Ministry.

Youth Program Direction: Direct and facilitate the weekly Friday evening youth program. This includes spiritual teaching, community building, and mentoring students to become active participants in the life of the church.

Worship & Spiritual Formation: Lead a dedicated youth-led worship service once a month, delivering messages that are relevant to students

Partnership with Parents & Teachers: Build a collaborative team of youth teachers and maintain strong communication with parents to ensure a holistic approach to the spiritual formation of the next generation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Spiritual Foundation & Disciplines (Mandatory): A committed Christian who demonstrates a vibrant, daily walk with Christ. Candidates must be dedicated to essential spiritual disciplines, including:

Scripture: Commitment to daily Bible reading and participation in the church’s annual Bible-reading plan.

Prayer: Active daily prayer life and regular participation in the church's online early morning prayer services (7:30 AM).

Stewardship: A faithful practitioner of tithing, reflecting a heart of gratitude and trust to God.

Calling: A clear calling to pastoral ministry with a specific heart for the next generation.

Education: M.Div. or equivalent theological degree from an accredited seminary. Candidates currently enrolled in an M.Div. program (In-progress) are also encouraged to apply and will be fully considered.

Experience: A proven track record in youth or educational ministry leadership.

Communication: Strong relational and communication skills with both students and parents.

Bilingual Ability: Ability to communicate in English and Spanish (or Korean) is highly preferred.
