올해 50주년을 맞이한 베델교회는 여전히 엘리야 특별새벽기도회(엘새)로 새해를 시작했습니다. 역시 엘새는 큰 은혜의 징조였습니다. [Come & See 50]를 외치며, 온 교회가 같이 기도하는 시간은 어떤 영적 공격에도 맞설 수 있는 하나님의 요새를 쌓는 것 같았습니다. 우리에게 썩어 가는 영혼의 부패로 우리의 생각과 말과 행동에서 죄의 악취가 코를 찌릅니다. 그러나, 하나님 말씀의 명약이 부패하는 영혼의 질병에 발라지며 기도의 능력이 나타납니다. 부정적인 생각과 쉽게 내뱉는 불평의 입술은 데미지 없는 착한 죄 같지만, 예수님의 상처 난 마음에 소금을 뿌리는 것과 마찬가지입니다. 힘이 없는 것 같지만 심각한 죄입니다. 잘라내지 않으면 온 몸을 썩게 만드는 끔찍한 질병입니다. 그 질병의 원인을 제거하고, 예방하는 것이 특별기도회의 축복이었습니다.

저의 연약함이 알려지면서 문자 그대로 세계 방방곡곡에서 위안의 소식과 기도약속의 안부들이 몰려 왔습니다. 한국, 유럽, 동남아 및 멕시코 등 온 세계에서 메시지와 전화가 걸려 와 기도를 약속하는 분들이 얼마나 큰 힘이 되었는지 모릅니다. 가장 큰 힘이 된 베델 성도들도 저를 위해 울면서 기도하는 초·중등부 학생들부터, 목사님께 기도의 빚을 졌다며 “이제는 우리 차례예요” 화이팅을 외치며 기도해 주시는 권사님들에 이르기까지 상상할 수 없는 기도의 후원을 실감하는 순간이었습니다. 함께 기도하는 성도들을 보는 것은 목회자의 큰 기쁨이요, 사역의 열매입니다. 특별히 지난 목요일은 환우들을 위해 기도하는 특별기도회 시간이었습니다. 한주 내내 기도로 이 시간을 준비하면서 주님만 바라보는 연약한 성도들이 건강을 회복하는 시간이 되기를 기대했습니다. 특별히 감사했던 것은 환우들을 위해 안수기도 하던 저를 잠시 붙들어 세우시고 장로님들이 저를 위해 기도해 주셨던 시간이었습니다. 갑자기 임하는 주의 은혜로 저도 기도해 주시던 장로님들도 같이 우는 시간이었습니다.

작년 엘새 때 안수 기도 받았던 예삶청년이 손편지 하나를 주셨는데, 신장에 난치의 병으로 절망하던 상황에서 기도의 힘으로 한 해를 지났다며, 본인은 안수기도 못하지만, 목사님을 위해 기도한다며 이렇게 쓰셨습니다. “…삶의 어려움, 특히 건강의 적신호는 더 쉽게 마음을 무너뜨릴 수 있다 생각해서 마음을 지켜 주시라고 기도하고 있습니다. 저는 때때로 이 병을 받아들이지 못하는 날들이 여전히 있는데, 만일 목사님께서도 그런 날을 마주하시는 날이 오게 된다면, 그 괴로움과 혼란의 시간이 아주 짧기를 그리고 신실하신 하나님의 위로가 목사님을 꼭 끌어 안으시기를 기도합니다. 목사님께서 말씀하셨듯, 주님은 저희와 함께 우시는 분이시니까요…” 이번 엘새는 같이 우시는 주님과 기도하는 시간이었음을 믿습니다.

God Cries with Us

We began New Year, on this 50th anniversary year of Bethel Church, once again with Eljah Early Morning Prayers(El-sae). Indeed, El-sae showed a sign of great blessing. We shouted [Come & See 50]. The time of prayers for the entire church was like building God’s fortress that can withstand any spiritual attacks. The stench of sins permeates our thoughts, words, and actions from our spiritual decay. However, as God’s word is applied to our spiritual diseases, the power of prayers is revealed. Our negative thoughts and complaints that spat out so easily may seem like a sin without causing any damage, but it’s just as if we sprinkled salt on God’s wounded heart. This is a serious sin even though it seems minor. It’s a terrible disease that will cause the entire body to rot if it’s not cut off. Removing the root of this disease and taking preventative measures were the blessings from the special prayer services.

With the news of my illness, texts of comforting and prayer promise are pouring in from everywhere. I received great strength from these messages and phone calls from Korea, Europe, Southeast Asia, and all parts of the world. I received greatest strength from our Bethel congregation who cried out for me, from elementary, BYM students to deaconesses shouting ‘fighting, we owe you prayers’ “now it’s our turn.” These were moments when I truly realized the power of unimaginable prayer support. Seeing congregation praying together is a great joy for a pastor and fruits of ministry. Thursday was a special prayer time for patients. As we prepared the week, we wanted a time of healing for weak patients who can only look to God. As I was laying my hands on patients and praying, I was thankful for the moment when an elder stopped me and prayed for me. The Elder and I wept together at God’s pouring of grace at the moment of prayer.

I received a handwritten letter from a young man in Yesalm Chapel who received prayers during last year’s El-sae. He said he survived a year of despair from his incurable kidney disease through strength of prayers. He wrote, although he cannot lay his hands on me to pray, that he was praying for me. “Difficulties of life, especially warning signs of health can easily break your heart, but I’m praying that God will protect your heart. I still cannot accept my disease at times. But if that time comes for you, I pray that suffering and confusion will be very short, and comforting of our faithful God will embrace you. Like you said, because God cries with us…” I believe this El-sae was the time when the Lord, who cries with us, prayed with us.
