목회계획은 프로그램이 아니라 교회가 지향하는 방향, ‘방향 더듬이’를 정하는 일입니다. 제가 한 해의 목회를 준비하며 가장 먼저 고민하는 것은 교회 표어, 곧 ‘방향 더듬이’를 정하는 일입니다. ‘하나님께서 지금 우리 교회에 무엇을 말씀하고 계시는가?’를 묵상하며, 프로그램보다 먼저 우리가 함께 바라볼 영적 방향을 세우고자 합니다.

저는 목회 표어를 정할 때 세 가지를 중요하게 생각합니다. 첫째는 말씀입니다. 개인의 아이디어나 시대의 유행이 아닌 그해 하나님께서 우리 교회에 주시는 말씀이 무엇인지 묻고 세웁니다. 베델교회는 한 해를 시작하는 신년 특별새벽기도회에서 담임목사가 목회 방향을 성도들에게 선포합니다. 목회계획은 사람의 생각이 아닌 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀에 따라 교회의 방향을 세워 가는 데서 시작됩니다. 둘째는 교회의 형편입니다. 성도와 교회가 지금 어디에 서있는지를 살핍니다. 위로가 필요한지, 다시 일어서야 하는지, 선교와 다음 세대를 향해야 하는지 시대적 요청을 분별합니다. 팬데믹 이후 다음 세대를 위한 기독교 교육의 필요에 따라 Bethel Classical Academy를 설립한 것이 한 예입니다. 셋째는 시대의 질문입니다. 교회는 시대와 동떨어진 섬이 아닙니다. 세상이 무엇을 두려워하고 있는지, 다음 세대가 무엇 때문에 교회를 떠나고 있는지, 우리 성도들이 일터와 가정에서 어떤 질문을 안고 살아가는지를 들어야 합니다. 이 세 가지가 만나는 지점에서 그해의 목회 주제가 태어납니다. 그래서 저는 목회 표어를 억지로 ‘만든다’기보다 기도와 말씀, 그리고 목회 현장을 바라보면서 ‘발견한다’는 표현을 더 좋아합니다.

또한 교회 표어는 성도들의 대화 속에 자연스럽게 나오도록 단순해야하고 영어권도 같이 할 수 있어야 한다고 생각합니다. 그래서 교회 표어로 주제곡을 만들어 온 회중이 같이 부르면서 한 해의 목표를 묵상하고 다짐하는 시간을 가집니다. 제가 중요하게 생각해 온 것은 한 해의 주제가 설교에서 교육으로, 교육에서 행사로, 행사에서 조직과 사역으로 흘러가게 하여 하나의 방향으로 연결하는, 목회의 ‘정렬(alignment)’입니다. 예를 들어 ‘Mighty God, Mighty Prayer’ 표어였던 해, 선교운동 표어를 ‘Mighty God, Mighty Mission’으로 삼아 온 교회가 한 방향으로 가고 있음을 보여주면서 이미 하고 있는 교회의 많은 사역들을 한 방향으로 정렬시키는 역할을 합니다. 교회 표어가 꼭 있어야 할 필요는 없지만 함께 배를 타고 가는 승객들이 배의 방향과 목적지를 알고 가야 하듯, 교회 표어는 성도들의 마음을 하나로 모아 같은 방향으로 가는 비전으로 이끌어 가는 데 주효하다고 믿습니다.

The Task of Setting the “Directional Feeler” (Part 1)

Ministry planning is not about creating programs, but about determining the direction the church aims toward—the task of setting a “directional feeler.” When I prepare for a year of ministry, the very first thing I ponder is establishing the church motto, or the “directional feeler.” Meditating on the question, “What is God saying to our church right now?” I seek to establish the spiritual direction we will look toward together before diving into programs.

When determining the ministry motto, I consider three things to be important: First is the Word. Rather than individual ideas or the trends of the times, I ask what Word God is giving to our church that year and establish it based on that. At Bethel Church, during the New Year Special Early Morning Prayer Meeting that kicks off the year, the senior pastor proclaims the ministry direction to the congregation. Ministry planning begins with hearing the Word of God—not human thoughts—and establishing the church’s direction according to that Word. Second is the church’s circumstances. I examine where the believers and the church currently stand. I discern the demands of the times, such as whether comfort is needed, whether we need to stand back up, or whether we need to head toward missions and the next generation. Establishing Bethel Classical Academy in response to the need for Christian education for the next generation after the pandemic is one example. Third is the questions of the age. The church is not an island disconnected from the times. We must listen to what the world is afraid of, why the next generation is leaving the church, and what questions our believers carry with them as they live in their workplaces and homes. At the intersection of these three elements, the ministry theme for the year is born. Therefore, rather than “making” a ministry motto by force, I prefer the expression “discovering” it through prayer, the Word, and observing the ministry field.

In addition, I believe that a church motto should be simple enough to naturally emerge within conversations, and it should also work well for English-speaking contexts. For this reason, we create a theme song for the church motto so that the entire congregation can sing it together, meditating on and committing to the year’s goals. What I have considered important is the “alignment” of ministry—flowing the yearly theme from preaching to education, from education to events, and from events to organization and ministry, thereby connecting everything into a single direction. For example, in a year when the motto was “Mighty God, Mighty Prayer,” we set the mission movement motto as “Mighty God, Mighty Mission,” demonstrating that the whole church was heading in one direction and serving to align the church’s many existing ministries into that single direction. While a church motto is not strictly necessary, just as passengers riding together on a ship need to know the vessel’s direction and destination, I believe a church motto is effective in gathering the hearts of the believers and leading them with a vision to move forward in the same direction.
