“골프와 자식은 맘대로 안 된다”는 골퍼들의 푸념은 비단 운동이나 자녀 교육에만 국한되지 않습니다. 공이 어디로 튈지 모르듯, 정도를 벗어나 통제에서 벗어나는 일상은 결국 ‘인생이란 내 뜻대로 흐르지 않는다’는 본질을 날카롭게 보여줍니다.

제 동창 중에도 두 아들을 프로 골퍼로 키우기 위해 20년 넘게 기러기 아빠로 살며 모든 것을 희생한 친구가 있습니다. 대학교 때 우승을 차지하며 프로로 전향할 만큼 유망했던 아들은 지금은 평범한 직장인으로 살아가고 있습니다. 가장 맘대로 안 되는 두 종목, 골프와 자식을 두고 온 부부가 헌신했던 친구의 마지막 고백 역시 “참 마음대로 안 된다”는 허탈함이었습니다. PGA 토너먼트 왕좌에 올랐던 박세리, 최경주 선수 같은 최고 프로들조차 똑같이 인정할 만큼 인생과 골프는 결코 호락호락하지 않습니다.

여기 한 도예가의 이야기가 있습니다. 그는 완벽한 항아리를 만들고자 매일 정성껏 흙을 반죽하고 물레를 돌렸습니다. 하지만 가마에서 구워져 나온 도자기들은 늘 그의 계산과 달리 조금씩 비뚤어지거나 예상치 못한 색깔로 변해 있었습니다. 화가 난 도예가가 수없이 작품을 깨트리며 좌절할 때, 노스승이 다가와 말했습니다. “불과 바람의 역사를 인정하게. 네가 손으로 흙을 만질 수는 있지만, 아름다운 그릇으로 완성하는 것은 가마 속 불의 영역이라네.”

우리 인생도 이와 같습니다. 내 힘과 계산으로 삶을 완전히 주도하려는 집착이 강해질수록 찾아오는 것은 깊은 좌절과 무력감뿐입니다. 하지만 성경은 내 한계를 겸손히 인정할 때 비로소 하나님의 일하심이 시작된다고 알려줍니다. 잠언 16장 9절은 “사람이 마음으로 자기의 길을 계획할지라도 그의 걸음을 인도하시는 이는 여호와시니라”고 말씀합니다. 내 맘대로 되지 않는 통제 불능의 순간은 역설적으로 내 인생의 주인이 내가 아님을 깨닫게 하는 거룩한 도화선이 됩니다.

엠마오로 내려가던 낙심한 제자들 곁에 가만히 찾아오셔서 함께 길을 걸어 주셨던 예수님처럼, 사람과 인생을 변화시키는 것은 날카로운 주장이나 강압적인 통제가 아니라 따뜻한 사랑과 하나님의 은혜입니다. 내 뜻대로 되지 않는 현실 앞에서 조바심을 내려놓고 주님의 인도하심을 기다려봅니다. 내 손을 떠난 공처럼 불안해 보이는 삶일지라도, 그 걸음을 친히 이끌어 주시는 신실한 주님의 손길이 이미 우리와 함께하고 있습니다.

The Grace of Life When Things Don’t Go My Way

The golfers’ complaint that “golf and raising children never go the way you want” is not limited to sports or parenting. Just as you never know where a golf ball will bounce, everyday life departing from its expected course or spinning out of control sharply exposes the core reality that ‘life does not flow according to my will.’

Among my former classmates, there is a friend who sacrificed everything for over 20 years, living as a long-distance-dad to raise his two sons to become professional golfers. His son, who was promising enough to win competitions in college and turn professional, now lives as an ordinary office worker. The final confession of this friend couple, who devoted themselves to golf and children, two things that least follow one’s will, was also a sense of emptiness: “Things really don’t go as planned.” Neither life nor golf is ever easy, as even top professionals like Se-ri Pak and K.J. Choi, who reached the heights of PGA/LPGA tournaments, readily acknowledge.

Here is a story of a potter. Seeking to create a perfect jar, he kneaded clay devotedly every day and spun the potter’s wheel. However, the potteries that emerged baked from the kiln were always slightly warped or changed into unexpected colors, contrary to his calculations. When the angry potter smashed countless works in frustration, an old master approached him and said: “Acknowledge the work of fire and wind. You can touch the clay with your hands but completing it into beautiful jars belongs to the domain of the fire inside the kiln.”

Our lives are the same. The stronger the obsession to completely control life through my own power and calculation, the deeper the frustration and helplessness that follow. However, the Bible teaches us that God’s work begins only when we humbly acknowledge our limits. Proverbs 16:9 states, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Paradoxically, moments that don’t go my way and are beyond control become a holy catalyst that makes me realize I am not the master of my own life.

Just as Jesus quietly came alongside the discouraged disciples walking down to Emmaus and walked with them, what transforms people and life is not sharp insistence or coercive control, but warm love and God’s grace. In the face of a reality that does not go according to my will, I let go of anxiety and wait for the Lord’s guidance. Even if life seems as uncertain as a ball that has left my hands, the faithful hand of the Lord—personally guiding those steps—is already with us.
