보스턴 필하모닉 유스 오케스트라의 음악감독을 맡고 있는 지휘자 벤자민 잔델은 한 강의에서 이런 말을 했습니다. “지금 클래식 음악을 좋아하는 사람은 세계 인구의 3%입니다. 그런데 그 비율을 4%로 올릴 수만 있다면 세계의 문제는 해결됩니다.” 클래식 음악이 사람들에게 미치는 선한 영향력을 뜻하는 말입니다. 얼마 전 세계적인 문제가 되었던 이스라엘과 하마스가 휴전한다고 발표했습니다. 가자 지역에 휴전협정이 이루어지면서 그 당일 날 가자 스트립에서 살던 피난민들이 축제 분위기로 자기 살던 땅으로 50만 명이나 돌아왔습니다. 하마스는 20명의 살아있는 이스라엘 포로를 사망한 포로와 더불어 풀어주고, 이스라엘은 1,700명의 팔레스타인 포로와 250명, 종신형을 받고 구금되어 있는 포로를 풀어 주기로 전격 합의한 것입니다. 수천수만 명의 인명 피해를 주던 전쟁이 끝난 것이 얼마나 다행인지 모르겠습니다. 아직도 끝나지 않은 전쟁이 있습니다. 얼마전 북한은 당 창건 80주년 열병식에서 미국을 향해서 쏠 수 있는 화성-20형 ICBM 비밀병기를 등장시켰습니다. 보기만 해도 살기가 느껴집니다. 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁도 아직 끝나지 않았습니다. 여전히 심각한 문제들이 우리 주변에서는 일어나고 있습니다. 모양새는 달라도 어쩌면 비슷한 문제가 우리 가정 안에도 일어나고 있습니다.

잔델 음악감독이 말처럼, 현재 82억 인구의 1%인 8천 2백만 명이 클래식 음악을 좋아하면, 이런 문제들의 해결책을 찾게 될 것인가? 곰곰이 생각하게 됩니다. 클래식 음악을 좋아하는 사람으로 그 유익을 저 나름대로 정리하면, 첫째로 떠오르는 유익은 협력입니다. 오케스트라를 같이 하려면 협연이 이루어져야 합니다. 같이 하모니를 맞추어야 합니다. 서로의 소리를 들으며, 지휘자의 통솔 안에 협력하는 것을 배우는 유익입니다. 둘째로, 음악이 주는 메시지 안에서 공감하는 능력입니다. 잔델은 “성공은 재산, 명예, 권세를 얼마나 가졌느냐가 아니라, 내 주위에 얼마나 많은 빛나는 눈들이 있느냐로 측정됩니다.” 음악 안에서 공감할 때 촉촉해지는 눈입니다. 그때 속에 응어리진 한 맺힘이 한 순간에 녹아 내리는 경험입니다. 그리고 그 공감 능력은 셋째, 내일에 대한 소망을 갖게 합니다. 불안한 마음이 들 때에 가끔 우리는 음악을 듣습니다. 실제로 정신적으로 힘든 사람들을 음악으로 치유하는 법은 고대부터 알려진 방법입니다.

목사인 저는 잔델이 말하는 클래식 음악 1%가 진정한 크리스천 1% 라면 세계는 얼마나 달라질까 생각합니다. 복음의 유익은 클래식 음악의 유익과는 비교도 안 되는 메가톤급 아닐까요?

Benjamin Zander, music director for Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra said the following in a lecture. “Three percent of population likes classical music. If only we could move it to four percent, our problems would be over.” He is speaking of the influence that classical music has on people. Not too long ago, it was announced that there would be seize-fire between Israel and Hamas. On the day of the seize-fire agreement, 500,000 refugees living in Gaza Strip returned to their homes in celebration. It was agreed that Hamas would release 20 living hostages along with the deceased, and Israel would release 1700 detainees and 250 prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment. It is such a relief that this war that costed tens of thousands of lives has finally ended. There is a war that still hasn’t ended. Not too long ago, North Korea revealed their secret weapon, Mars-20 ICBM at their nation’s 80th anniversary military parade. Just looking at it gave me chills. The Russia- Ukraine war hasn’t ended either. There are serious issues constantly arising around us. Things look different, but similar issues arise in our families.

Like what the music director Zander said, if 1% of current population of 8.2 billion, 82 million people likes classical music, can we find answers to these issues? It makes us think deeply. When I think about this question, as a person who likes classical music, the first benefit that comes to my mind is cooperation. To play in an orchestra, cooperation must take place. You must harmonize together. It’s the benefit of learning to listen to other’s sound under the conductor’s command. Second, it’s the ability to empathize with the message from music. According to Zander, “It’s not about wealth and fame and power. It’s about how many shinning eyes I have around me.” They are the eyes that become moist when empathized with music. It is an experience when resentments that had been pent up inside melt away in an instant. That empathy gives hope for tomorrow. When we feel insecure, we often listen to music. with music is a method that has been known since old ages.

As a pastor, if that 1% classical music Zander talked about is 1% true Christian, I think about how different the world would be. Wouldn’t the benefit of gospel be on a mega-level scale higher, incomparable to the benefits of classical music?
