수술 후 치료 중, 성도님들의 수많은 격려의 글 중에, 저를 미소 짓게 했던 글이 “목사님 좋아하시는 풋볼 경기 맘껏 보세요”였습니다. 마침 프로 미식축구 플레이오프 시즌이었는데, 모처럼 주일 늦은 오후 LA 램스와 시카고 베어즈의 경기를 보게 되었습니다. 정기 시즌 성적이 더 좋은 시카고에서 LA팀이 원정가서 치르는 경기였습니다. 따뜻한 캘리포니아 날씨가 익숙했을 선수들이 눈 내리는 추운 시카고의 그 유명한 Soldier Field에서 손에 땀을 쥐는 경기를 이어갔습니다. 17대 10으로 승리를 코 앞에 두고 있었지만, 시카고의 마지막 공격이 경기 종료 18초를 남기고 기적적인 터치다운 플레이를 하면서 17대 17로 동점 연장에 들어갔습니다. 결론은 숨 막히는 연장전 끝에 LA 램스가 디비전 타이틀을 거머쥐었지만, 저는 연장전 경기보다, 마지막 18초 남겨 두고 연장전 15분에 승부를 거는 코치 숀 맥베이의 결정을 이야기 하고 싶습니다.

18초면, 또 다른 기적이 없으리라 할 수 없는 시간입니다. 풋볼은 마지막 2분, 아니, 마지막 몇 초를 남기고 게임을 뒤집는 일들이 비일비재하기 때문입니다. 다 이긴 경기를 18초 남기고 아쉽게 연장전에 들어가야 하는 팀의 입장에서 18초 동안 적어도 두 번의 공격 기회를 이용해서 3, 40 야드 진행할 수 있다면, 공을 차서 점수를 낼 수 있습니다. 그러나 그 기회를 포기하고 연장 15분에 들어가는 결정을 코치가 합니다. 숀 맥베이 코치는 2017년 최연소의 나이로 프로 풋볼팀 맡은 코치로 유명합니다. 2016년 가장 열세였던 팀을 2021년 수퍼볼 우승팀으로 만든 전설적인 코치지만 여전히 현역으로 뛰고 있는 명장입니다. 그가 18초의 기적보다는 15분의 연장전을 선택한 이유가 무엇이었을까 생각해 보았습니다.

첫째, 요행을 바라지 않겠다는 결정이었다고 봅니다. 그 만큼 자기 선수들을 호되게 훈련시켰기에 18초 요행보다, 끝까지 실력으로 붙어보겠다는 코치의 자신감이었다고 믿습니다. 둘째, 다 졌다 생각할 수 있는 경기를 극적으로 동점으로 돌린 시카고의 사기를 잠시나마 잠재울 수 있는 시간이 필요했다고 판단했을 것입니다. 18초의 공격 기회에 실수를 한다면, 사기가 진작된 홈경기의 시카고에 엉뚱한 기회가 갈 수 있는 것을 사전에 차단하겠다는 코치의 결정이었습니다. 셋째, 연장전에 들어가기 전, 코치가 선수들에게 무슨 말을 했을까 상상해 보았습니다. “이제 다시 원점이다” “다 이긴 경기를 아깝게 진 것이 아니다” “이제 제대로 붙어 볼 시간이다” “이 시간을 위해서 우리는 땀흘려 훈련 받았다” “나가서 너희들의 실력을 보여줘라” 이런 이야기가 아니었을까 싶습니다. 요행 보다는 땀 흘려 훈련 받았던 선수들을 믿었기 때문이었습니다. 사랑하는 성도 여러분! 요행 보단 훈련 받은 실력입니다. 제자훈련에 도전하십시오.

Believed in Training, Not 18 seconds of Luck!

While going through treatments after my surgery, I received countless words of encouragement from congregation. Among them, the following put a smile on my face, “Pastor, watch football games to your heart’s content.” It so happened that it was during NFL football playoff season. For the first time in a long time, I watched a game, late afternoon on a Sunday, between LA Rams and Chicago Bears. It was an away game for the LA team in Chicago, against a team with much better season standing. The game was a nail-biting match in the famous Soldier Field arena in cold snowy Chicago for the California athletes who are more familiar with warmer weather. The score was 17 to 10 with victory at their grasp for the Rams. With 18 seconds remaining, Chicago’s miraculous touchdown pushed the game in a tie, 17 to 17. The game concluded a breathtaking overtime with LA Rams snatching the division title. I want to talk about Coach Sean McVay’s decision on the 18 seconds remaining, not the overtime game.

18 seconds may not be enough time for any kind of miracles. However, it is common in football games to overturn in the last 2 minutes or even with few seconds remaining in the game. From the perspective of a team that almost won the game with 18 seconds remaining, having to face overtime, there may be two opportunities to attack in those 18 seconds; move 30, 40 yards, and they can kick a field goal to add points. However, the coach’s decision was to give up that opportunity and proceed to 15 minutes overtime. Coach Sean McVay is known for being the youngest person to coach a professional football team in 2017. He took the most disadvantaged team in 2016 to win a Super Bowl in 2021. He is a legendary coach, a renowned master strategist who remains active in the game. I thought about why he chose the 15-minute overtime over 18-second miracle.

First, his decision did not rely on luck. I believe he had the confidence in the team’s skill and ability after the huge amount of strenuous training he put them through, rather than 18-second luck. Second, he likely determined that they needed some time, however brief, to dampen the morale of the Chicago team that just dramatically tied the game that they may have thought already lost. If the Rams failed in the 18-second offensive opportunity, that may boost even more morale for the Chicago’s home game. He wanted to curtail that with his decision. Third, I imagined what the coach might have said to the team before going into overtime. I suspect it might have been a conversation along these lines, “Now, we’re back to square one” “We did not lose a game we had already won” “Now it’s time to go head to head for real” “We trained hard for a time like this” “Let’s go and show them what we’ve got,” because he believed in the athletes that trained hard, rather than luck.
