아내는 비행기만 타고 내리면 김치찌개가 먹고 싶다고 합니다. 이번에도 한국에 도착하자마자 얼큰한 김치찌개가 먹고 싶다 해서 숙소 근처 김치찌개집에 들렀습니다. 식당에 들어서자마자 주방 입구에 현수막처럼 걸려 있는 족자를 보았습니다. 이렇게 쓰여 있었습니다. ‘고기를 아끼면 우리는 망한다.’ 글귀가 재미있어서 사진도 찍고 카톡에도 올렸습니다. 잠시 후 김치찌개가 나왔는데, 고기찜을 시켰다고 착각할 정도로 좋은 돼지고기가 보글보글 끓는 찌개에 푸짐하게 담겨 나왔습니다. 돼지고기를 즐겨 먹지 않는 저도 고기가 기름지지 않은데도 부드럽고 맛있었고, 김치찌개가 정말 시원하고 속을 훑는 것 같이 내려갔습니다. 식당벽에는 김치찌개 [8계명]이 걸려 있었습니다. ‘찌개 맛이 달라지면 손님 맘도 달라진다!’ ‘인사를 잘하면 가게가 살아난다!’ ‘내가 뭘 하든 손님은 다 안다.’ ‘일할 때는 신명나게, 오늘도 지화자’… 구구절절 가슴에 박히는 말들이었습니다. 다 맞는 말이고, 수긍이 가고 고개를 절로 끄덕이게 하는 글귀 앞에서 무릎을 쳤습니다.

이 원리는 신앙생활에도 적용될 만합니다. 교회의 교회됨은 예배이며, 섬김이며, 전도와 선교입니다. 이 일에 인색한 교회는 그 결과가 보나마나입니다. 김치찌개의 핵심을 빼면 맛이 없고, 맛이 없어지면 그 식당은 망하듯이, 교회의 핵심이 빠지면 망하는 길로 가는 것입니다. 저는 개인적으로 설교자로 이 글귀를 적용해 보았습니다. ‘목사가 말씀(공부)을 아끼면 목회는 망한다.’ 말이 100% 수긍됩니다. 강단에 서기 전까지 얼마큼 아낌없는 시간과 연구와 연습의 투자가 선포되는 메시지의 질을 결정한다고 할 수 있습니다. ‘말씀의 맛이 달라지면 성도들도 변한다.’ ‘설교자가 어떤 설교를 하든 성도는 다 안다.’… 저는 설교 강단에 설 때마다 늘 예레미야 20:9를 묵상하고 등단합니다. ‘내가 다시는 여호와를 선포하지 아니하며 그의 이름으로 말하지 아니하리라 하면 나의 마음이 불붙는 것 같아서 골수에 사무치니 답답하여 견딜 수 없나이다.’ 지금까지 하나님이 주시는 이 거룩한 ‘답답함’ 없이 강단에 선 적은 없었던 것 같습니다. 그 답답함이 에너지가 되었고, 열정이 되었고, 눈물이 되었던 것 같습니다. 요즘은 성도님들이 저의 설교를 들으면 다 아는 것 같다는 생각을 합니다. 때로는 무섭기까지 합니다. 대충할 수 없는 일이며, 나의 에너지와 시간을 아껴서 되는 일이 결코 아님을 알기에 오늘도 그 초심으로 강단에 섭니다.

우리에게도 틀림없이 아끼면 안 되는 것이 있을 것입니다. 아니, 아꼈다가 망하는 것이 있을 것입니다. 본질로 돌아갑시다. 초심으로 재출발합시다. 이 초심으로 한 식당도 일어난다면 우리도 일어날 수 있습니다. ‘지화자, 신명나게 주님의 사명 아끼지 말고 감당합시다.’

Skimping on Meat will Lead us to Doom

Whenever we get off a plane in Korea, my wife says she craves kimchi stew. As always, as soon as we arrived in Korea, she craved kimchi stew. So, we went to a kimchi stew restaurant nearby our hotel. As soon as we entered the restaurant, we saw a scroll hanging like a banner at the entrance of the kitchen. Following was written on it. “If we skimped on meat, we are doomed.” The sentence was amusing. I took a picture and even posted it on my Kakao. Shortly after, kimchi stew arrived. It could have easily been mistaken for a braised pork dish. Huge quantity of high-quality pork was on top of the boiling stew. Even though I don’t enjoy pork, it was tender and delicious without too much fat. The kimchi stew was truly satisfying. It went down so smoothly that I felt like it cleansed my inside. On a wall of the restaurant hung [8 Commandments] of kimchi stew. “If taste of stew changes, customer’s heart will change too!” “Good greeting revives the store!” “No matter what I do, customers know everything” “When working, do it with high spirits – cheers to another day!”…every single word pierced straight to my heart. Every word rang true and entirely convincing. I nodded in spontaneous agreement and slapped my knee in sheer appreciation.

These principles can be applied to our faith life. The nature of a church is worship, serving, evangelism and missions. When church skimps on this kind of work, the result is obvious. If the core taste of kimchi is taken out, it no longer tastes good. If it doesn’t taste good, the restaurant will fail. In the same way, if the church lost its core, it’s headed for doom. Personally, I tried to apply this sentence as a preacher. “If a pastor skimps on studying the Word, his ministry will fail.” I agree with this 100%. One can measure how much time, research, and investing in practice is spent without skimping determines the quality of the message. “If the quality of message changes, congregation will change” “No matter what message is preached, congregation knows everything” … I meditate on Jeremiah 20:9 before each time I stand on the pulpit, “If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.” I don’t think I have ever stood on a pulpit without the God given holy “weariness with holding in it.” This weariness of holding in became my energy, passion, and tears. Nowadays, I think that you know everything as you listen to my sermon. Sometimes, I even fear. This is not a task that can be done half-heartedly. I know that my energy and time cannot be skimped. So, today, I stand on this pulpit again with that heart of original mind set.

For certain, we all have things that shouldn’t be skimped. Or we failed because of skimping. Let’s return to our original heart. Let’s make a fresh start with the original mindset. If a restaurant could be revived with the original mindset, we too can revive. “Hooray, let us joyfully and wholeheartedly fulfill the Lord’s mission without holding anything back.
