덴젤 워싱턴 주연 영화 <천국부터 지옥까지>를 기내에서 보았습니다. 음반 제작자의 대부로 ‘천재의 귀’를 가진 자로 등장하는 주인공 데이빗의 아내는 그의 고등학생인 아들을 납치 했다는 유괴범으로부터 전화를 받습니다. 아들을 살아서 돌려 받기를 원하면 천칠백오십만불($17.5 million)을 가져오라는 협박이었습니다. 큰 돈이었으나, 아들을 위해서 무조건 내놓겠다 하고 납치범과 흥정을 시작하면서 경찰에 신고하여 이 일을 대처하기 시작합니다. 그러다가 아들이 유괴된 것이 아니라, 아들의 친구가 유괴 된 것을 알게 됩니다. 모자를 우연히 바꿔 쓰는 바람에 납치범이 착각을 한 것이었습니다. 그런데 유괴된 아들 친구의 아버지가 데이빗 회사의 직원이며, 주인공 데이빗과도 오래된 친구였습니다. 영화는 여기에서 심각한 고민을 관람객에서 던집니다. $17.5 million에 아들을 찾으려 했던 데이빗은 더이상 내 아들이 아니니, 자기가 돈을 낼 수 없다고 흥정을 끊어 버립니다. 그러나 정작 아들이 납치된 것을 알게 된 직원은 도저히 그런 돈을 마련할 수 없어서 납치범과는 흥정도 할 수 없었습니다. 결국은 친구이자 직장 대표인 데이빗을 찾아가 눈물로 호소를 하게 됩니다. $17.5million을 대신 내달라고 합니다. 심지어 자기 아들조차도 아버지 데이빗에게 대신 돈을 내달라 간청할 때, 결국 데이빗은 $17.5 million을 가지고 납치범을 만나러 가는 이야기입니다.

자기 아들을 위해서는 큰 돈을 미련 없이 내놓는 것은 당연하지만, 친구이지만, 그 친구의 아들을 납치한 범인에게 큰 돈을 똑같은 돈을 내놓는 것을 거부합니다. 결국은 친구 아들을 위해서 돈을 내기로 결정 하지만, 그 과정 속에 내 아들이 아닌 이상 기쁘게 돈을 낼 수 없는 이기적 인간의 심리를 읽을 수 있었습니다. 영화를 보면서 계속 나에게 질문합니다. 나라면 어떻게 할까? 내 아들을 살릴 수 있다면 빚을 지더라도 그 돈을 당연히 준비하겠지만, 다른 사람의 아들을 위해서 똑같은 희생을 치룰 수 있을까? 이런 질문을 하면서 나를 위해 가격을 치르신 하나님의 마음을 생각하게 됩니다. 생명의 가격을 돈으로 환산할 수 없겠지만, 마귀에 납치된 우리를 위해서 하나님은 미련 없이 아들의 가격을 내놓고 우리를 사십니다. 주저함이 없으십니다. 하나님이 보시기에 우리는 남의 아들이 아닙니다. 자신의 아들입니다.

오늘은 부활절입니다. 죽음에서 부활하신 우리 구세주 예수님을 찬양하고 축하하는 기독교의 최대의 명절입니다. 나를 살리기 위해 아들을 포기하신 하나님 아버지를 생각하면 우리가 얼마나 소중한 존재인지를 알게 됩니다. 오늘 처음으로 혹은 오랜 만에 교회를 찾아오신 분들에게 생명보다 소중한 예수님을 영접하는 기쁨이 있기를 간절히 기도합니다.

Highest 2 Lowest

I watched a movie on the airplane called [Highest 2 Lowest], starring Denzel Washington. The main character David, a record producer with “genius ears,” and his wife receive a call from a kidnapper who has abducted their high school son. They were threatened with $17.5 million ransom if they wanted their son returned alive. It’s a lot of money, but they were willing to pay for their son. They began negotiating with the kidnapper and dealing with the situation by reporting it to the police. Then, they discovered that it wasn’t their son who was abducted, but it was a friend of their son. The kidnapper mistook him because the kids had switched their caps. Father of the abducted son worked for David’s company. He was a longtime friend of David. At this point, the movie throws a profound question to audience. David ends the negotiation saying that he can no longer pay $17.5 million since it’s not his son. But the worker whose son was abducted could not in any way come up with the demand of the kidnapper and was unable to even negotiate. Finally, the father goes to David, his friend and CEO of the company. He pleads with him in tears. He asks for $17.5 million. Even David’s son asks for his father to pay. The story continues that, ultimately, David takes the $17.5 millions to meet the kidnapper.

He had no reservations giving that kind of money for his son. Although being a friend, he refused to give the abductor that kind of money for his friend’s son. Finally, he decides to give the money for the friend’s son. However, in the process, we can read the selfishness of mankind where we cannot happily pay anything for someone who is not our son. I kept asking myself during the movie. What would I have done? If it meant saving my own son, I would have raised that money even if it meant going into debt. But for someone else’s son, would I have done the same? While asking myself these questions, I reflected on God’s heart– the One who paid the price for my sake. Value of life cannot be converted into money, but God paid the price of His Son to purchase us who had been abducted by devil, without hesitation. God does not see us as someone else’s son. We are His son.

Today is Easter Sunday. This is Christian’s greatest day to praise and celebrate our Savior Jesus who resurrected from death. As we reflect on God the Father who gave up His Son to save us, we come to realize just how precious we are. To those of you who came to church for the very first time or for the first time in a long time, I sincerely pray that you will experience the joy of receiving Jesus, who is more precious than life itself.
