영어로 “I got used to do it” 익숙해졌다는 말입니다. 미국 와서 살면서 어색했던 영어가 점점 익숙해집니다. 처음에 “안녕하세요?” 인사말도 어색했는데, 이제는 한국 사람끼리도 영어로 인사를 나누는 것이 전혀 어색하지 않습니다. 그것처럼 아내에게 남편에게 칭찬과 격려, 그리고 고마움을 표시하는 말들은 처음에는 어색할 수가 있습니다. 그러나 외국어 배우듯 자꾸 배우면 어느 순간 익숙해집니다. 어느 분은 남편이 그런 말을 할 때, ‘영혼이 없는 말’ 같다며 불평 아닌 불평을 합니다. 외국어를 배우는 것은 말하기보다 듣는 것을 먼저 배워야 하는 것이 맞을지도 모릅니다. 저는 아직도 머릿속에서 한국말을 영어로 번역한 후 영어로 말하는 경우가 많습니다. 그 번역하는 시간이 부자연스러울 수 있습니다. 아내가 남편의 “고맙다”는 말이 영혼이 없다고 느껴지는 이유가 번역의 시간차 때문이지, 결코 내용이 가짜는 아닐 것이라는 생각을 해봅니다.

이번 주말 우리는 ‘고난’에 대한 신학강좌를 가지면서 많은 강의와 말씀을 들었습니다. 느닷없이 우리 삶에 끼어든 고난은 낯선 손님과 같고, 처음으로 배워야 하는 외국어 같다는 생각을 했습니다. 외국 생활을 하면서 그 나라 말을 ABC부터 배우는 어려움을 경험하지 못하면, TV에서 보는 외국의 풍경은 정말로 그림의 떡입니다. 동경할 만한 풍경을 즐길 수 있는 여유 뒤에는 언어와 문화를 배우는 시간이 전제되어 있습니다. 즉 익숙해지는 시간이 없다면 아무리 아름다운 풍경이라도 즐길 수 없을 것입니다.

고난을 즐긴다는 말은 어폐가 있습니다. 그 누구도 일부러 고난을 자처하지는 않습니다. 그러나 고난에 익숙해지면, 좀 더 정확하게 표현한다면, 고난의 어떤 숙련 기간이 지나고 나면, 비로소 보이는 것들이 있습니다. C. S. 루이스의 말을 빌리면, 비로소 들리는 하나님의 음성이 있습니다. <돌에게 말하는 법 가르치기>의 저자 애니 딜러드는 이렇게 말합니다.

당신은 어두운 바깥에 앉아 있을 필요가 없다

하지만 별들이 보고 싶다면

반드시 어둠이 필요하다는 걸 알게 될 것이다

별들은 어둠을 필요로 하지도 요구하지도 않지만,

별을 보고 싶어서 어둠을 일부러 찾지 않을지 몰라도, 어둠이 왔을 때 비로소 보이는 빤짝이는 별들이 있습니다. 옛날 큰 별이 동방박사를 예수님께 인도 했듯이, 우리도 어느 날, 고난에 익숙해진 시간에 예수님 앞에 와 있을 것입니다.

English phrase ‘I got used to it’ means that you have become familiar. While living in America, I have become more familiar with English. I was awkward in the beginning. In the beginning, it was awkward even to say the greeting ‘How are you?’ Now it’s not awkward at all to greet even other Koreans in English. Similarly, it could be awkward to praise and encourage wife or husband. Initially, expressing words of gratitude could feel awkward. But, like learning another language, at some point, you will become used to it. Some complain, which is really not a complaint, that when her husband says such thing, it feels like empty words. Perhaps, when learning another language, it’s proper to learn to listen first before speaking. I still, more than not, translate Korean to English in my head before speaking in English. That period of translation could feel unnatural. I think the reason why the wife says her husband’s ‘thank you’ feels empty is because of the translation time, not that the content is fake.

During our Theological Seminar this weekend, we have listened to many lectures and sermons on suffering. Hardships that suddenly come into our lives are like strange guests. It’s like foreign language that you must learn for the first time. When you haven’t lived in a foreign land and haven’t experienced learning their language from ABC, pictures of foreign land on TV are nothing more than a pie in the sky. Being able to enjoy the foreign scenery worthy of admiration requires spending time to learn the language and culture. If there wasn’t time to familiarize, despite the beauty, you can’t really enjoy the scenery.

It is a misnomer to say that one enjoys suffering. No one claims suffering for oneself on purpose. However, if you became used to suffering, more accurately, after some period of hardship and learning, there are things that will be revealed at last. Borrowing C.S. Lewis’s words, at last you hear God’s voice. Author of Annie Dillard says this.

You don’t have to sit outside in the dark

But if you want to see the stars

You will find that they need darkness

Stars don’t need or demand darkness,

You may not seek out darkness to see stars, but there are twinkling stars that can only be seen when darkness falls. Long time ago, a large star led the wisemen to Jesus. We will one day, when we are used to suffering, come stand in front of Jesus.
