저는 심성이 착하고, 남을 도와주는 일에 앞장서고 배려가 깊은 분을 만나면, 이런 생각을 합니다. “저 분 너무 크리스천 같다.” 혹시 말을 걸 수 있는 기회가 있으면, “교회 다니시지요?” “당신은 크리스천입니까?” 자연스럽게 묻게 됩니다.

지난 주 저희 교회는 실크 웨이브 이사회를 호스팅하였습니다. 미국 각 지역에서 오신 50여명의 이사님들이 정말 이슬람권을 향한 비전들을 모아 뜨겁게 기도하며, 특별히 2027년 4월 튀르키에 안탈리아에서 열리는 Blessings to Nations(B2N) 집회를 위해 구체적인 계획과 의논을 나누었습니다. 회의 사이사이 찬양과 예배를 드리는 중 말씀을 나누었던 한국 대표 목사님이 튀르키에 지진 때 구호작업하며 들은 이야기를 들려 주셨습니다. 우리가 모두 알다시피 튀르키에는 사도바울이 종횡무진 다니며 복음을 전했던 땅이며, 계시록의 일곱 교회가 있는 성경의 땅이라 할 수 있습니다. 그러나, 지금은 기독교인인 0.2%도 되지 않는 복음의 척박한 땅이며, 2022년 인권 침해 보고서에 따르면 기독교 노동자와 가족이 추방 내지는 입국이 금지됐다고 합니다. 

이같이 기독교에 폐쇄적인 나라가 2023년 7.8 규모의 강진을 맞아 가지안텝 도시는 초토화 되었고, 약 170,000명의 사상자가 발생했습니다. 그때 우리 베델교회는 물론 실크웨이브 선교회는 적극적으로 모금하여 저들의 생필품과 주거를 위한 컨테이너 하우스를 공급하는데 최선을 다했습니다. 이때, 튀르키에 관료들이 현장에서 구호활동 하던 목사님에게 물었던 질문이 “당신들은 크리스천입니까?”이었다고 합니다. 이 질문이 참으로 묘한 의미로 남았다고 합니다. 왜냐하면, 튀르키에 지진이 일어났던 장소가 역사적으로 사도 바울과 바나바를 첫 선교사로 파송했던 안디옥 교회가 있었던 도시였으며 그 안디옥에서 처음으로 예수 믿는 자들을 “크리스천”이라고 불렀던 곳이었기 때문입니다.

지금은 새벽마다 아잔(adhan) 소리와 함께 깨는 나라에서 사도 바울 이후 2000년이 지나, 지진으로 흔들린 그 나라에서 땀을 흘리며 돕고 있던 코리안에게 “당신은 크리스천입니까?” 물었다는 것입니다. 아무리 복음을 전해도 문이 꽉 닫힌 집처럼 답답했던 그 나라 사람들의 마음이 지진으로 흔들리더니, 예수 사랑을 실천하는 우리들에게 크리스천이냐고 물었던 것입니다. 어쩌면 지금 우리에게 하나님이 기대하시는 모습은 누군가가 여러분의 언행을 보고 자기들이 알고 있는 세상과 너무 달라서 “혹시, 당신들은 크리스천입니까?” 질문은 받는 모습이 아닐까요?

Are You a Christian?

When I meet a person whose heart is kind, who takes the lead in helping others, and whose consideration is deep, I think this: “That person seems so much like a Christian.” If there is an opportunity to speak, I naturally ask: “Do you go to church?” “Are you a Christian?”

Last week our church hosted the Silk Wave board meeting. About fifty board members who came from different regions of the United States gathered visions for the Islamic world, prayed fervently, and especially shared concrete plans and discussions for the Blessings to Nations (B2N) gathering that will be held in April 2027 in Antalya, Türkiye. In between the sessions of worship and praise, the Korean representative pastor who shared the Word told us a story he heard while doing relief work during the earthquake in Türkiye. As we all know, Türkiye is the land where the Apostle Paul tirelessly went about preaching the gospel, and it is also the biblical land of the seven churches of Revelation. 

But now it is barren soil for the gospel, with not even 0.2% Christians, and according to the 2022 human rights report, Christian workers and their families were either expelled or denied entry. Such a country closed to Christianity was struck by a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.8 in July 2023. The city of Gaziantep was devastated, and about 170,000 people were killed or injured. At that time, not only our Bethel Church but also Silk Wave Mission actively raised funds and did our utmost to supply daily necessities and container houses for shelter. It was then that the Turkish officials asked the pastor who was doing relief work on site this question: “Are you Christians?” He said that this question remained with a very strange meaning. Why? Because the very place where the earthquake struck was historically the city where the Antioch church was located—the church that had first sent Paul and Barnabas as missionaries—and it was in that Antioch that those who believed in Jesus were first called “Christians.”

Now, in a land that wakes every dawn with the sound of the adhan, two thousand years after the Apostle Paul, in that earthquake-shaken land, the officials asked Koreans who were sweating and serving: “Are you Christians?” Though the gospel had been preached, their hearts had been like tightly shut houses—yet shaken by the earthquake, they asked us who were practicing the love of Jesus if we were Christians. Perhaps what God expects of us now is this: that someone, seeing your words and actions so different from what they know in the world, would ask you, “By any chance, are you Christians?”
