세코야 국립공원(Sequoia National Park)에 방문했던 어느 목사님의 간증은 많은 동감을 얻기에 충분합니다. 당연히 하늘 높이 올곧게 뻗은 레드우드를 보는 것이 최고 인기의 풍경일 것입니다. 길 중앙에 쓰러진 거대한 거목을 뚫어 차가 지나가게 한 터널도 명소이며, 세상에서 제일 크다는 셔먼장군 나무(General Sherman Tree)도 빠질 수 없는 구경거리입니다. 특별히 무려 천 년이 넘도록 넘어지지 않고 83미터 넘는 높이로 서 있는 나무를 보노라면 경외심마저 듭니다. 그런데, 그 나무의 밑둥은 사람이 들어갈 만큼 비어 있고, 심지어 시커멓게 타 그을려 있습니다. 이것은 본 어느 목사님이 “너도 목회했냐?” 했다는 말은 괜히 마음이 짠 해집니다. 그 나무는 몇 번이나 죽을 고비를 넘겼을까요?

김치도 다섯 번 죽어야 맛을 낸다고 합니다. 밭에서 뽑힐 때 첫 죽음을 경험하고, 시퍼런 부엌칼로 배추의 배를 가를 때에 두 번째 죽음을 맞이합니다. 그리고, 소금에 팍팍 절여지면서 모든 힘이 빠지고, 흐물흐물 죽어갑니다. 그 후 고추가루와 각종 지독한 양념과 젓갈로 버무려지면서 네 번째 죽고 마지막 다섯 번째로 김장독에서 길고 긴 추운 겨울 밤을 보낸 후, 세상에 나올 때 도마 위에서 칼로 싹둑싹둑 잘리며 장렬한 죽음을 맞습니다. 그때 비로소 사람의 입에 감칠 맛 나는 김치 맛이 난답니다.

사도 바울은 이렇게 고백합니다. “형제들아 내가 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에서 가진 바 너희에게 대한 나의 자랑을 두고 단언하노니 나는 날마다 죽노라”(고전 15:31) 바울이 날마다 죽는 경험은 무엇이었을까요? 매일 신경통으로 고생했을까요? 하루하루 끼니를 해결하기 위해서 천막을 깁는 일로 힘들었을까요? 바울은 예수님의 부활을 증거하면서 내가 맹수와 싸우는 것이라면 죽고 사는 일이 무슨 의미가 있냐고 이야기하면서 “속지 말라 악한 동무들은 선한 행실을 더럽히나니”(고전 15:33) 말씀합니다. 

복음 증거하는 바울에 대한 악담과 복음 전하는 선한 행실을 더럽히는 일을 하는 자들에 대해 말하면서 “날마다 죽는다”고 했습니다. 선한 의도를 곡해하고 악담하는 자들 때문에 겪는 고통을 표현한 것입니다. 어쩌면 사도 바울을 집요하게 따라다니며 괴롭히며, 죽이려고 하는 유대주의자들의 공격을 염두에 둔 것이라 추측합니다. 그러나 날마다 죽는 일을 스스로 자고하지 않고, 끝까지 복음사역을 완주하도록 하는 하나님의 은혜가 족하다 고백하는 바울 앞에 우리는 겸손할 수 밖에 없습니다. 늦은 저녁 귀가하여 라면을 끓여 먹는데, 김치가 도마에서 썰려 나오는데, 김치 앞에서 숙연해집니다.

Even Kimchi Dies Five Times…

A testimony of a pastor, who visited Sequoia National Park, filled us enough to garner much sympathy. Obviously, the most popular scenery is the redwood trees soaring towards sky. Other famous places are the drive-thru tunnel of a fallen giant tree in the middle of the road, and the world’s biggest tree, General Sherman. It is something not to be missed. When looking up at the General Sherman Tree, still standing even after a thousand years, extending upwards of 83 meters, you can’t help but to be in awe. However, the base of the tree, black and burnt, is hollow enough for a person to stand in. One pastor who saw this tree said, “You were in ministry too?” I could feel the ache in my heart from his comment. How many times has this tree been on the verge of death?

They say kimchi tastes good after it goes through five deaths. First death comes when a cabbage is pulled out from ground. Second death comes when a sharp kitchen knife cuts through the cabbage. Then it is salted until all strength is gone and withers to death. After that, fourth death comes when it is mixed with all kinds of strong seasonings and fermented sauce. Then fifth death comes after being placed in a jar through a long cold winter. It finally comes out into the world and is sliced on a cutting board. Only then, the savory taste of kimchi hits good to our mouth.

Apostle Paul confesses, “I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day!” (1Cor 15:31) What was Paul’s experience of daily death? Did he suffer from arthritis? Was it his hard work of tent making just to make ends meet? As Paul witnessed to the resurrected Jesus, while saying what is the point of living and dying if I’m fighting a beast, he said, “Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals.” (1Cor 15:33) 

Speaking of those who spoke badly of Paul who testified to the gospel, and those who did things to tarnish the good deeds of preaching the gospel, he said, “I die every day.” He expresses his suffering that comes from those misinterpreting good intentions and speaking badly of him. We can assume that, probably, these were the attacks from Judaizers who followed him, making things difficult and plotting to kill him. We can only be humbled before Paul, who did not give up on the work of dying daily, and confessed that God’s grace is sufficient, allowing him to complete the gospel ministry. Returning home late at night, I made ramen to eat. Kimchi was sliced on a cutting board and brought out, and I became solemn.
