Sense of Belonging

Rev. Bryan Kim

I play tennis twice a week after early morning prayer with my fellow pastors at Bethel. I was really getting into the game and having a great time, but then I sprained my right ankle. Fortunately, the bone isn’t broken, but having to wear a cast boot and getting around on crutches makes me realize just how inconvenient life can be. I am unable to drive, so my wife drives me wherever I need to go. Whenever I arrive at the church, the other pastors push me around in a wheelchair and even carry my Bible for me. This injured ankle of mine has ended up causing a burden to my entire family and the whole church, and the thought that this will continue for about a month just makes me feel sorry. What percentage of my total body weight does my right ankle actually make up? One-hundredth, or 1%? Compared to the entire church, does my ankle even make up one ten-millionth? Yet, when one part is in pain, the other 99% share that pain together. From opening and closing a car door to riding the church’s rarely used elevator, everything has taken on a new meaning. Not long ago, during a theology lecture series, an elderly pastor with a leg disability remained seated in the main sanctuary throughout the first, second, and third Sunday services rather than moving around between my office and the sanctuary with the other instructors. Now, I finally understand why.

I also realized that preaching while standing through all three services isn’t just about straining your voice—it requires the strength of your legs to hold you up, and your ankles must be strong. So, during our recent Wednesday Word Journey, I led the Soteriology Bible study while sitting down. Rather than just pulling up a single chair, the Wednesday worship team set up a table in a studio-like arrangement and made it look nice so I could share the Word comfortably. Many congregation members said it was easier to listen because we were at eye level, and that it truly felt like studying at a BTS (Bethel) Theological Seminary.

It was just my ankle that was injured, but seeing the whole church put in extra effort because of my weakened ankle reminded me of what the Apostle Paul said when describing the church in 1 Corinthians 12:26–27: “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” This is a statement that is possible only when we are in Christ. The world does not help everyone simply out of pity; it does not operate merely on sympathy. Thus, it is impossible without the “consciousness of belonging”—the realization that we are all members of the body of Christ. The recovery of my injured ankle is for Christ, and it has been an opportunity for me to gain a new realization that none of our members is small or less important.
