이스라엘 감람산에 가면, 예수님이 땀방울이 핏방울이 되도록 기도하셨던 겟세마네 정원에 2000년된 올리브 나무가 있다고 합니다. 어쩌면 예수님이 이곳 겟세마네에서 기도할 때에 이 나무가 예수님의 기도하는 모습을 지켜보고 있었다고 하면, 갑자기 그 나무 앞에서 옷깃을 여미게 됩니다. 

세쿼이아 국립공원 깊숙한 숲에는 ‘셔먼 장군 나무(General Sherman Tree)’라 불리는 거대한 나무가 우뚝 서 있습니다. 그리고 그 나이가 2200년이 넘는다고 합니다. 현존하는 나무 중 가장 부피가 크다고 합니다. 다들 2000년 넘게 악천후와 산불을 견뎌온 나무 앞에서 신비한 경외심까지 느끼며 사진 찍기 위해 줄을 섭니다. 지난 번 목회자들이 다녀온 네바다 타호 호수(Lake Tahoe)는 미국에서 두 번 째로 큰 호수라고 합니다. 만 피트 정상에서 내려다 보는 호수는 하나님을 만날 것 같은 분위기 속에 ‘Heavenly’라 불리고 있습니다.

이처럼 광활한 자연 앞에서 사람들은 하나님을 생각하게 하고, 경건함을 갖게 되나 봅니다. 사람이 만든 고층 빌딩이나, 9,999 방을 가진 거대한 왕궁 앞에서는 감탄으로 끝나지만, 인간적인 냄새가 배제된 자연 그대로의 모습은 더 크신 하나님을 상기시키는 효과가 나타납니다.

제일 오래 되었다고, 혹은 제일 크다고, 다 좋다고 할 수는 없을지 몰라도, 그 기록이 우리에게 매력이 있는 것은 그 세월과 사이즈가 말해주는 메시지 때문일 것입니다. 셔먼 장군 나무는 산불, 가뭄, 병충해 등 다양한 위기를 겪으며 성장해 왔는데, 특히 산불은 나무에게 큰 위협이 되지만, 오히려 산불 후에는 새로운 싹이 자라는 기회가 되면서, 오늘까지도 웅장한 자연 공원으로 남아서 많은 관광객들을 유인하게 되었나 봅니다. 타호 호수(Lake Tahoe)는 긴 세월 동안 화산과 빙하 작용, 그리고 단층 작용 겪으며 형성 되었고, 그 변함 없는 모습에 하늘나라 같다는 별명까지 얻었습니다.

어려운 세월을 지나면서 키워진 연수와 크기는 단순히 장엄함으로 끝나지 않고, 우리에게 남기는 메시지가 있습니다. 긴 세월을 견뎌낸 인내이며, 그 인내 속에 담기는 호수 만한 겸손입니다. 생일을 맞을 때마다 세월에 부끄럽지 않은 겸손이 커가고 있는지 돌아보게 됩니다. 성경은 백발 앞에서 일어나라고 말합니다(레 19:32). 또한 백발은 영화의 면류관이라고 말씀하며, 백발이 대변하는 세월의 흐름을 결코 무시해서는 안된다고 경고합니다(잠 16:31). 요즘 다들 염색을 많이 해서 그런지, 백발 앞에 일어설 어른들이 점점 주는 것 같습니다.

Inter-relationship Between Age and Humility

At Mount Carmel in Israel, there is a place called Gethsemane where Jesus prayed until drops of sweat became drops of blood. In the garden of Gethsemane, there is a 2000-year-old olive tree. When you think about the tree, it may have watched Jesus praying. 

That suddenly makes us straighten our cloths in front of the tree. Deep in the Sequoia National Park stands a huge tree named General Sherman. This tree is said to be more than 2200 years old. It is the biggest in size of all existing trees. Out of respect for the tree that endured severe weather and forest fires over 2000 years, people line up to take pictures. Pastoral staff recently went to Lake Tahoe, Nevada. It is said to be the second largest lake in the U.S. Looking down on the lake from top of the mountain, 10,000 feet in elevation, it almost felt like we might see God. Thus, the place is called ‘Heavenly.’

This vastness of nature makes people think about God. There’s a certain sense of sacredness. When built by man, whether it’s a high rise building or a 9,999-room castle, it only amounts to admiration. However, nature, as it stands, with no human touch, has the effect of reminding us of the great God.

We would not be able to say that it is all good just because it’s the oldest or the biggest. But the record attracts our interest because of the message it conveys through time and size. General Sherman tree matured through experiencing forest fires, drought, parasites, and other dangers. Specially, a forest fire is the biggest threat. However, after the fire, it gives an opportunity for new seedlings to grow. Today it is a vast nature park that attracts many visitors. Lake Tahoe is, over a very long time, formed by the work of volcano, glacier, and faults. Its unchanging image coined a nickname Heavenly.

Its age and size, growing through difficult times, do not just end with simply being majestic. It has a message for us. It’s the perseverance through time. In that perseverance is the humility that is the size of a lake. On every birthday, I look back to see if my humility has grown unashamed over time. The Bible tells us to stand up before the gray head (Lev 19:32). Also, it says that gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life (Prov 16:31), and they should not be ignored. Nowadays everyone dyes their hair. Gray-haired elderly that we should stand for are decreasing.
